How to turn your minivan into a comfortable sleeping area

I built this simple setup for my Pontiac Montana, and I think it should work with most mininvans. It sleeps 2 people comfortably and it has plenty of room for luggage. This will not turn your minivan into a camper, but it makes for a more comfortable camping trip than sleeping in a tent. Warning: It is extremely dangerous to carry loose items in the back of a minivan. Everything should be tied down with a cargo net.

The floor of my Pontiac Montana slopes down toward the front; therefore, I built a sub floor to make it flat. I also built a platform to hold luggage. This platform rests on the bed when the van is in motion or for best access to the luggage. The platform is raised to allow sleeping (leg room) underneath it.

1) The sub floor is simply a 1/2 inch sheet of plywood with a 2X4 screwed at the front (on its side). I cut the length of the plywood to 5 feet, which is the length required for the floor of my van to be flat. In the middle (length wise) I screwed another 2X4 (this time flat on its side), to give support in the middle. This sub floor can be easily removed from the van.

2) I built a 4'X3' luggage platform. This is built with a 1/4 inch plywood, with a 2X3 frame. I have also screwed a 1X6 board at the front of the platform.

The platform is held in place with racheting tie-down straps. This way the platform can be easily raised at night to make room for your legs. It is also easily lowered down before traveling. The tie-down straps are hooked in the anchors for the seat belts.

As shown in the photos, once the platform is up there is plenty of room to sleep. There is also ample space for luggage on the platform, and about a foot and a half left at the back of the van for more storage space.
