| How to Bend Wood with Steam | |

Bending wood using a steam chamber is relatively easy. First you must build a steam chamber large enough to accommodate your project. For instance, if you are making skis, normally you need a long narrow chamber. A 4" or 5" pvc pipe works well. In my project I needed something a little wider. I used laundry detergent plastic buckets. I cut off the bottom of 2 buckets. Then I used the "handyman's secret weapon" (duct tape) to hold the 3 buckets together. Cut a hole in the side of the chamber to insert one end of the hose. Place the other end of the hose in the kettle, and start boiling your water. Make sure there is a small hole in the chamber for the steam to escape. Otherwise too much pressure could build up and it could explode. Steam the wood for an hour per inch of thickness. | |
