Skiing & Hiking the Wapta Traverse

WARNING: This trip is mostly over glaciers and should only be attempted by skiers/hikers who have glacier travel experience. It is recommended that you hire a professional guide.

The Wapta Traverse is a classic alpine traverses in the Canadian Rockies. It is usually done in winter on skis, but it can also be done in summer. The traverse is typically completed from north to south, starting at Peyto Lake, next to the Icefields Parkway and traversing southward to exit at Wapta Lake via Sherbrooke Lake. Along the traverse are four ACC huts: Peyto Hut, Bow Hut, Balfour Hut, and Scott Duncan Hut.

Day One: Hike down to Peyto Lake, then hike on the moraine on right side to the base of Peyto Galcier. Once on the glacier stay on the right, pass the first major bend, you will see Peyto Hut on the left.
